3 Reasons Why You Should Learn How to Use a Multimeter In Your RV Today

Nov 25, 2024

If you like RVing but hate fighting with the RV industry then here are the top 3 reasons why you should learn how to use a multimeter in your RV today.

Money

First a multimeter can save you a boatload of money. Even a $7 multimeter from Harbor Freight can save you $1000’s in RV repairs.

The big box RV store near me is charging almost $500 per call.

They are charging almost $250 an hour, have a two hour minimum, AND the clock on that two hours starts when they leave their shop. So if you are 30 minutes away from the closest shop you could be paying $500 for one actual hour of tech time.

If learning how to use that $7 meter keeps you from having to call a tech even once then you’ve made back your money and then some.

Time

Okay you may be thinking you’ll avoid paying for a tech to come out to you by just taking your RV into a shop.

Well the wait times at shops are insane right now. You could be looking at waiting weeks before someone even takes a look at your RV. Nevermind then waiting for parts to come in… Then waiting on someone to install those parts…

The number of RV’s on the road just outnumbers the number of qualified tech’s out there.

So especially in the middle of the summer the list of people waiting for repairs gets loooong.

Even if you don’t know how to use every setting on your meter perfectly, if you can learn how to fix some of the easy stuff in your RV you can help keep shops open for the larger repairs.

Confidence

Thirdly, learning how to use a multimeter in your RV is a major boost to your confidence.

I know most of us got into RVing because we love the freedom and independence it brings.

Nothing puts a damper on that feeling like when something goes wrong and you don’t know what to do.

And I’ll tell you right now… when something breaks in your rig and you know how to fix it immediately you feel like a total rock star.

I also know (controversial take incoming) that some tech’s out there just kind of suck.

Not all of them. I’ve met some amazing tech’s out there that are awesome.

But I can’t tell you how many stories I’ve heard from customers about a tech coming into their space and talking down to them in their own RV.

Gross.

I work really hard as a young woman in the space to change what RV techs look and sound like.

I put out educational content out every day teaching people how to be independent in their own RV.

When I’m on calls I always make a point of showing the customer at least one part of the process that they can do themselves.

And I work really hard to never make an RV owner feel uncomfortable in their own space.

But there are only so many me’s out there.

I’m really passionate about teaching people how to fix their own rigs because I’ve seen how disempowered some owners feel in their own RV’s.

I want to give people that power back!

And the first step of learning how to fix things around your RV is learning the basics of how to use a multimeter.

I promise it's not as scary or complicated as it looks.

If you want to take that first step with me check out my $5000 challenge.

I’ll walk you through 10 of the most common calls that I get as a tech and show you how you can solve them yourself using just a multimeter.

By the end you’ll know how to save over $5000 in RV Repairs.
